Building a custom home or remodeling a current home both require extensive consideration of not only what will serve well for the family living there, but also what is going to be desired by the next family. “The typical buyer of a single-family home can be expected to stay in the home approximately 13 years before moving out,” according to a study done by the National Association of Home Builders. This means that most homeowners are looking for their next home before they’re even halfway through paying their mortgage.

So what can you do to your home to make sure it stands out when the time comes to sell? Well, thanks to a recent survey on “What Home Buyers Really Want,” we have a list of ten upscale features to consider adding to your home.

10. A Game Room – This can be just a room that includes a ping-pong or pool table, but having this feature can transform a room into a great space for entertaining, which is something people always consider when looking for a home.

9. Home in a Golf Course Community – This feature is more of a status symbol versus something functional within the home so it applies to a very niche market. However, if you find the right buyer, this could be a huge selling point.

8. An Exercise Room – Weight loss is a huge focus in America so having the ability to work out from home, especially for people with busier schedules, can make the difference in buying a home or not.

7. A Wet Bar – This goes along the same lines as #10 and having a space to entertain. Having a wet bar also includes some plumbing considerations so be sure you get the advice of an architect before moving forward with this addition.

6. An Elevator – This feature isn’t highly desired by the majority of people, but for the people in a very high-end market, this single feature can truly set a home apart from the crowd.

5. Two-story Entry Foyer – The first thing you see when you enter a home will make the first (and lasting) impression of all whom visit. A two-story foyer can ensure this impression will be a great one.

4. An Outdoor Kitchen – Summer is the peak season for entertaining. And since most of our time is spent outside, it makes sense to also make that a place where we can cook. No one likes running in and out of the house to check on things in the kitchen.

3. Kitchen With a Wine Cooler – While this is not a necessity for a kitchen, like a stove or refrigerator, it is a nice feature if the space can accommodate it.

2. Two-story Family Room – The family room is where you probably spend the majority of your waking hours. Having a two-story family doesn’t necessarily serve a physical function, but it will definitely add to the aesthetics of the home.
